Boba Fett

Let’s face it. Mandalorians are a cocky bunch. Look at him, tilting his head. It’s like he’s behind that helmet saying, “Take the damn picture before I kill you.” That’s OK. I’m not afraid of Boba Fett. After all, what is his great claim to fame? Oh, that’s right. He followed the Millennium Falcon and snitched on Han Solo. He didn’t even capture the guy. He just phoned it in! That’s too lame to deserve such a cocky attitude.

Star Wars Weekends

Today is the beginning of Star Wars Weekends at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. In August, Orlando will again host Star Wars Celebration. Hordes of Star Wars fans descend upon us for both of these events and drop some serious money in the local hotels, restaurants and some other businesses. As long as they’re paying, who cares if they dress up and bang plastic sticks at each other?

I end up going to Star Wars Weekends every year because I like to take photos, but also because I like Star Wars. The first year I attended seemed much better than recent years. There were more characters just walking around. Lately, everything seems far too organized. People stand in lines to get autographs and photos with a character. I was happier when you could turn a corner and find a couple of Storm Troopers carrying a tray of cookies. Spontaneity is more fun. You never get a pleasant surprise by standing in line for a scheduled encounter.

Despite the changes, it’s still a pretty good time. People are nice and you can forget about the rest of the world for a while. If that’s not enough, where else can you see Darth Vader and Chewbacca in a dance-off competition? Even though the same guy wins every year, it’s still pretty amazing to see how some of these folks can move in those costumes.

Star Wars Celebration

This event doesn’t happen every year, but it’s the über-geek convention for Star Wars fans. People drop big money on tickets to this conference, not to mention more money just to get inside some of the panel discussions, or even more money to pay an aging Luke Skywalker for his signature. Me, I’ve never paid for a signature. The only signature I want is on a check endorsed to me. However, that’s what the people want. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be a market for over-priced autographs.

I go for the visuals, though.

I Have a Bad Feeling About This - © Copyright 2012 by Orlando Local

This is what I’m talking about. Perfect costumes. Outstanding sets (including a life-sized TIE Interceptor) built by Belgians who brought these sets across the ocean to show here for a few days. Droid races. Did you know that people actually build droids like R2-D2 and race them against each other? I didn’t, but those little suckers are kind of zippy. It’s cool to watch, at least until to people start banging plastic sticks against each other.

The truth is that these events give people a chance to escape the monotony of the real world for a while. I’ll never dress up. I’ll never have a plastic stick to bang against someone else. I may build a droid to race one day, though. So, I suppose there’s a bit of something for everyone. It all starts today.

Just remember – be kind to the Wookies.

Before yesterday, I’d never been on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Since I heard it’s going to be closing soon for refurbishment, I decided to trek out to Magic Kingdom in the morning and take it for a spin. After all, this weekend is going to be busy due to the marathon. In fact, it had a healthy crowd yesterday.

I arrived there about 11:00 am and the line wait said it was 30 minutes (actual time longer). I got in line and started going through the maze. After about 20 minutes of winding around, something strange happened. I’m facing forward with my hands resting in my pockets and then I suddenly feel a woman’s hands reach inside my arms and wrap around my body. Then she slowly started rubbing, massaging, whatever you want to call it.

Honestly, I didn’t turn around to see who it was right away. I figured there must be someone I knew who found me and was trying to surprise me, so I was content to let it continue for a while. Then I looked down and saw she had some tiny hands. Too tiny.

I finally turn around and it’s some six or seven year old girl who mistook me for her Dad or something. She was shocked. I was shocked….then I just started laughing. Poor girl jumped back a few paces and apologized, but I told her not to worry about it. That definitely wasn’t something I expected today. I guess we both learned it’s better to look first.

I went out to Gaylord Palms ICE! on Tuesday. It’s best for me to hit this thing early before it gets too crowded. Not only do the prices go up for peak times, but so does the hassle factor. I like to take pictures and it’s pretty dark in there for photography; not to mention cold at 9 degrees. Dim light means you have to do one of three things:

Raise your ISO (creates noisy pictures)

Use flash (ruins the atmosphere of the place)

Use a tripod (winner)

That’s right, a lugged a tripod out there to get my pictures. Everyone else walked around with a cell phone camera or a small point & shoot with a flash. Most folks just wanted to pose in front of the ice carvings, snap a shot (which it seems to take them far too long to do), and then move along. Not me. I’m the only dude out there setting up a DSLR on a tripod with a shutter release, taking brackets of 5 different exposures. One of them has to turn out, right? At least that’s what I keep telling myself.

The nice thing about a tripod is that you get a clean shot with the ambient light. The downside is that it takes time to make that shot; time spent waiting on a seemingly endless crowd meandering through popping their little cell phone flashes about, generally right in front of my camera which somehow seems invisible.

That’s OK, though. They have just as much right to be there as I do. I run into this kind of thing all the time and I know how to handle it – with patience. I have it, they don’t. That means they’ll scurry along to the next scene soon enough. I just have to watch the ebb & flow between crowds and take my shots when the place is empty. Like I said, I do it all the time. The difference here is that it’s 9 DEGREES! Patience is much more difficult in the cold. Especially when one of those groups decides to stop in that archway and have a conversion while my big ass is sitting on the floor with a camera and a tripod waiting for them to get out of the way.

In any case, I eventually got my shots because they eventually moved. My ass was numb, but I’ve heard that we must suffer for our art. I’ve suffered to bring you this photo, and many more than I’m not posting yet.

Speaking of suffering, they have sound clips from the movie playing repeatedly in the different rooms. Most folks only hear them once, because they move along before it replays. I heard them about a dozen times. They haunt me in my sleep now, especially that creepy exclamation of “SEASON’S GREETINGS!” Did I mention that I suffered for my art?

What you see above is essentially the womb of America’s Space Program. Inside the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), NASA assembled its rockets from the Apollo program to the Space Shuttle. These days, most folks are familiar with the image of the Space Shuttle rolling out of this building, but it was constructed for the Saturn V rockets of the Apollo era. I grew up during that time, watching images of the space program and going over for every launch. The Saturn V was an awesome rocket. I still remember lugging along a tape recorder to capture the sound of a launch so I’d have to something to bring to my 3rd grade class for Show & Tell. For those of you who have never witnesses a launch, you don’t just see and hear it. You feel it. A launch vibrates through your body & soul.

When the first Space Shuttle launched, I was in my last year of high school. My Boy Scout troop was camping in the wilderness survival area of Patrick Air Force Base. We watched the astronauts arrive in their jets and do some practice runs. When it was time for the launch, the Air Force invited us all on a bus to go view the launch. We had already seen the new Space Shuttle and it was drastically different than any of the rockets we’d seen before, but we were excited to see a launch again. When Columbia (STS-1) launched, I remember we all had the same collective response – That’s it?

Compared to a Saturn V launch, the Space Shuttle seemed slow. Where the Saturn V was a drag racer, the Space Shuttle was a truck. We wondered if the damn thing would ever get out of orbit.

Over the years, we learned to love our shuttle missions. It didn’t start with the same pizazz of an Apollo mission. I mean, those Saturn V’s were going to the moon. The Space Shuttle didn’t really go anywhere until the International Space Station started assembly. Piece by piece, NASA built its missions and made the Space Shuttle seem a little more cool with every mission (except for those voice-over speeches upon launch – always sounded like a cheap infomercial).

Before we could go to space, we needed a place to build our rockets. That purpose, much less its massive size, made the VAB seem so cool. It’s the birthplace of our rockets. Sub-assemblies may come from all over the place, but it’s not a space vessel until all those pieces get inside the VAB and joined together, loaded on a crawler, and prepared for rollout.

NASA hasn’t permitted visitors inside the VAB since the days between Apollo and the Space Shuttle assembly. Decades have passed and now I finally had the chance to fulfill a dream. A small group of friends were equally interested, so we all made plans to meet at Kennedy Space Center on Sunday and take the Up Close tour with a stop to get inside the VAB.

I think we all geeked out at the prospect. The tour itself wasn’t anything to get excited about. In fact, we only had a few minutes inside the VAB – ten minutes and forty seconds, according to my friend’s timer.

This is where the fantasy took a bit of a curve into the mundane. Remember, we’re on a tour, so we’re tourists. Tourists don’t use tripods for photos, but a few of us did. As soon as we entered the VAB, the tour guide wanted us all to move down to the far end behind a yellow line. Of course, that wasn’t a good place to setup for a shot, so I put my tripod right where you see it – then I moved down.

We all had to stay together, so it became very apparent that my opportunity to get this shot was about to be blown. In fact, the tour guide picked up a portable speaker system and started his speech right in front of my camera. Fortunately, I managed to get back to my spot and start taking my photos, because it was clear we weren’t going to be able to stay and take pictures once he finally stopped talking. I didn’t listen to a word he said. I just kept waiting for him to get out of my frame. He finally stepped aside – still in the frame – and I started shooting, thinking I’d have to use Photoshop to edit him out. Fortunately, he finally got far enough away that I could get this shot. Then it was time to pack up and move over to see Endeavour.

In typical NASA fashion, the orbiter was behind not one, but TWO fences. The first fence was to keep us in our place, and the other one was there to block the shot of the orbiter. It was a pathetic way to display a piece of history. NASA is good in that they allow photography all over the place. NASA is bad in that it puts obstacles in front of nearly every visually pleasing piece you’d want to photograph. That, combined with the short time in the building, put a bit of a damper on the experience. I was setting up for another shot when they said it was time to go. It was excitement and disappointment combined.

Still, I’m happy I went. Not only did I have good company with some friends, but I finally got to step inside a piece of history and make my own art from it. All in all, that’s a pretty good day for me. I got the shot I wanted, although with some panic. This one is getting printed on aluminum – big aluminum!

Located at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Star Tours is a Star Wars themed motion-simulation ride. It shut down for renovation after the Star Wars Celebration V convention in Orlando last year at an event called Last Tour to Endor. I took the ride that night and couldn’t hear a fucking thing because of the drunken assholes in the simulator with me. What the hell, I’d been on it before and they were having fun. I still have plenty more years ahead to be a crotchety old-man who bitches about everything, but I reserve the right to practice.

Now flash forward – Star Tours 2 is scheduled to re-open on May 20th, coinciding with Star Wars Weekends. Last Friday, Disney opened the ride for castmembers to preview. Then on Saturday and Sunday, it was soft-opened for park attendees. I managed to head out there and took the ride a couple of times. We weren’t allowed to take any photos, so the shots you see here are from the Last Tour to Endor trip, except this one:

Star Tours Warning - © Copyright 2011 by Orlando Local

The Queue

You will spend most of your time in line. Kids have to be at least 48″ tall (or there-abouts). This seems like a standard disclaimer for a motion ride, but don’t let it freak you out. The ride tilts a bit here or there, but you’re in a solid chair with a seatbelt fastened. Nobody gets lurched out of their chair if they meet the requirements to get inside. Obviously, you wouldn’t want a baby in a stroller on this ride, as they would probably bounce around a bit. In addition to the motion, this is also a 3D experience. That means you put on some silly glasses. It seemed to work fine. I understand some people may get queasy from 3D, but I didn’t detect the slightest discomfort from it.

C-3PO - © Copyright 2011 by Orlando Local

Just like the old Star Tours, you enter through a winding queue under an AT-AT (which peed on me) through trees in the forest of Endor. Once you get inside, there are two lines to keep things flowing. Inside, there’s a pretty cool display showing departure times and occasional videos of your Star Tours destinations. C3PO and R2-D2 are there working on a transport. That display you see behind C3PO in the photo above has really been updated to a much more modern sci-fi look, rather than a bunch of colorful yet meaningless blocks. They did a great job of making sure the display also works with the story. When C3PO detects a malfunction and starts yelling at R2-D2, the display matches the moment. Also, C3PO just looks much cleaner.

R2-D2 is in the same place on top of the transport, but it has a fresh Red paint job. The theme seems to be much earlier in the series, so a fresh & clean look is appropriate. As you get further in the queue, you see some old droids on the sides marked as defective. People who previously rode the old Star Tours ride will recognize them as the pilot droid of that version, Rx-24. You also see a couple of other droids scanning luggage with an X-ray system. It’s a nice jab at the TSA, and the images on the luggage show that you can pack whatever you damn well please and it’ll pass inspection. As you get further up the line, another scanner shows a sort of infra-red (orange) scan of people in line. It seems only to work on the folks who opted for the left lane of the queue, though.

Incompetent Queue Management

On my first time through the line, I took the left lane. It moved MUCH slower than the right lane. I noticed plenty of people from further behind me in the line were passing me on the right. On my second trip, the left lane was empty. I asked about it and the castmember at the podium told me they stopped using it; everyone had to go through the right lane. OK. As I got about 75% of the way, I noticed that a LOT of people were racing past me in the left lane. Looks like they decided to open it, letting hundreds of people from the back of the line move ahead of those of us who had been waiting. If that wasn’t enough, another cast-member opened a small chain-gate to let people behind me in the right lane to start filling the left. When I moved to take advantage, he told me I couldn’t do it, I was too far ahead.

Disney doesn’t really care about being fair in its queue management. As far as they’re concerned, you’re all going to get on the ride. They don’t care if some people have to wait longer for it than others, even if you got there before all of those other folks. With that in mind, I’d like to take this opportunity to extend my middle finger to the jerks who made that decisions.

Have a magical fucking day.

Changes to the Ride

First thing, I’m not going to try and spoil anything for you. In the old version of Star Tours, you always got the same ride. A very nice change to the new version is that you really don’t take the same ride one time after another. There are several combinations of scenarios, so you really don’t know what you’re going to get. You may see Darth Vader one time, and Princess Leia the next. You may fly through Kashyyk (the Wookie Planet) or Hoth. You may fly with the Millennium Falcon or Admiral Ackbar. There are probably other combinations that I didn’t see, which is pretty cool. Although I think the ride is far too short compared to the time spent winding in the queue, it’s still a great experience. I’m guessing that queue would last a lot longer if the ride didn’t move quickly, too.

Even though the experience is a new one, there are still issues. On my first ride, the seatbelt buckle was broken. I had to leave my choices spot in the center of the front row to move back to a seat that wasn’t broken. On the second ride, everyone boarded and they found a problem. We all had to get off, wait a while, and then re-board. They clearly still have some kinks to work-out, but that’s why you have a soft-open. When the real deal comes around, I hope all of these issues get resolved.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with the ride. I hope Disney starts to treat its guests in line more fairly, but I won’t hold my breath. In any event, expect some long lines for this ride when it opens. It’s getting a good buzz, particularly due to the StarTours2Live Crew keeping folks updated on Twitter.

Another Food Truck Bazaar popped up last Sunday by the Fashion Square Mall. I missed the first one. Truth be told, I’ve been missing the entire food truck craze happening around town lately. I’m not even sure why the concept is so popular, so I wrote it off as a fad. My idea of eating out is not being the one outside of the venue, peering in through a window wonder just what the hell is happening to my potential meal in there. I like going to a restaurant, sitting down in some air conditioning while an attentive server places my order with an unseen kitchen staff and then brings me an excellent meal on a plate. I still haven’t been to Four Rivers for BBQ. Inadequate parking, standing outside in a line, ordering at a counter and then hoping I get a seat at some uncomfortable table just doesn’t appeal to me. The food may damn well be excellent, but the experience isn’t one for me.

However, sometimes fads make for interesting subjects and I had some free time late Sunday. Not enough free time to really get into the whole experience, though. Rather than planning on visiting for some food, I planned it as a photo exercise and to satisfy a bit of my curiosity, too. That said, I only managed to order something from one of the trucks.

Red Eye BBQ - © Copyright 2011 by Orlando Local

Having never seen these trucks before, I was hoping for some colorful vehicles. Also, I kind of wanted to see a few of them together. My idea was more visual than practical, but I’m selfish like that. The trucks were scattered around the parking lot. It wasn’t visually attractive, but the idea was practical – make room so the line from one truck doesn’t screw up the line from another one. My own sensibility would be to have them park in a circle – sort of like covered wagons fending off an attack. It would give the operators a bit of a safety zone in the middle, and the lines for each truck could extend out like spokes on a bicycle wheel. Practical, sensible, and far more photogenic. Since I wasn’t consulted, they went with the scattered approach and it worked.

Yum Yum Cupcake Truck - © Copyright 2011 by Orlando Local

The only truck that I really knew I had to try was the Yum Yum Cupcake Truck. I have this cupcake fetish lately. Having recently come back from Las Vegas, I was in need of a great cupcake. While there, I tried a place called Sugar. Very over the top and impressed with themselves, the cupcakes at Sugar taste like dried dog-shit. Seriously, it was dry and almost crunchy cake. By far and away, it was the most pathetic dessert I’ve ever eaten, and that includes anything made by a child with an Easy Bake Oven. With that disaster on my mind, I eagerly approached the Yum Yum truck and tried the Carrot and Red Velvet cupcakes.

Meh. It wasn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination. It just didn’t blow me away. The cake was good, but the icing seemed to have a consistency more like whipped cream than what I expected. Good flavor in the cake, but not so much in the icing. I’m glad that I finally tried it, but I’ll stick with Sweet! by Miss Holly for my cupcakes in the future. Everyone has their own tastes and these guys appear to have a lot of fans. They brought out 1400 cupcakes and sold out. That wouldn’t happen if the cupcakes sucked, so please don’t misinterpret me. It’s a good product. It’s just my own preferences are a little different.

Tree House Truck - © Copyright 2011 by Orlando Local

I pretty much keep to myself when I go out. One of the guys from Tree House Truck saw me shooting and asked if I was shooting for a newspaper. I told him it was just for my little blog. He asked which one and I reluctantly told him. Surprisingly, he’d heard of it and didn’t call me an asshole. Now that’s a nice touch! Of course, that was when it dawned on me that one of the big attractions of this event is the social gathering. Even though I had to leave fairly early into the event, I was watching things go back & forth about it on Twitter. One person mentioned that it reminded him of Block Parties in Brooklyn. That aspect seems pretty cool. On my way back to my car, I noticed a few couples sitting on their bumper eating food on little tray tables they setup – very smart. I was walking around trying to juggle a camera, tripod, a pair of cupcakes and a bottle of Orange Crush while my pants were falling off my ass. Smooth, I know.

From everything I could tell, this event was a great success. People were happy and trucks were selling out. I’m following a few of them that have Twitter and Facebook accounts, so maybe one day I’ll try this for a meal. Just remind me to bring my own chair and table. If someone wants to act as my server, I tip well.

If it’s March, it must be time for MegaCon at the Orange County Convention Center. I spent a day there last year – my first of any kind of Comic or Sci-Fi convention. I’m sure that I stood out like a sore thumb, as I had not bothered to wear tights or a cape, nor did I have a colorful stick to challenge another attendee to…fuck, I don’t know what they were fighting over. It was just a lot of banging of the sticks.

I’m debating whether to go tomorrow or not. On the one hand, Bill Shatner is speaking and I’d actually like to hear what he has to say about his career and experiences. On the other hand, I hate crowds and this place is going to be packed. I already have to attend a conference there next week and another one near the end of April, so I’ll have my fill of crowds. On top of that, add in the overpriced parking rates of the convention center and the appeal starts waning rapidly.

Even more than the crowd, though, was something that really turned me off last year – the smell. Not the smell of the convention center, mind you, but the smell of the attendees. In other words, they needed to bathe with soap and water. Seriously, most of the people there just stunk. Well, it seemed like most people. Maybe there were just some über-stinkers there that permeated the air and influenced others with their bodily funk. Whatever, I don’t get why having an interest in comics or science-fiction is mutually exclusive of good hygiene. For the love of your fellow man, take a bath before you go out in public!

Now if it seems like I’m just complaining (I am), there’s something I do like about this event. The people who attend are passionate about this stuff. They dress up for it, some wearing multiple outfits or costumes per day. They spend time making their own costumes – some more impressive than others. How often do you run across people who care this much about anything? It takes a certain amount of confidence to walk out in public dressed in brightly colored tights without worrying what anyone else will think.

Buns of Steel - © Copyright 2011 by Orlando Local

Supergirl seems to be using her X-Ray vision to admire Superman’s buns of steel. These folks are interesting. Trying to take photos in a convention center is an exercise in frustration due to the wretched lighting and cluttered backgrounds, but you can get some snapshots.

As you would expect, there are vendors selling all sorts of stuff that I would consider junk. To the faithful, they’re collector’s items or useful for creating their next costume. I think most folks just go to let it all hang out for a day with some like-minded people, and they tolerate skeptics like me. I can appreciate that and it’s interesting to see what they’ll wear.

MegaCon tickets are no longer available online, but you can pay $25 at the door per day. A 3-day ticket is available for $60.

Update: Guitar Center Responds

Based upon the things I’ve written in this post, Guitar Center contacted me and dealt with the issues presented here. Check it out on this post.

Why I visited Guitar Center

It was supposed to be a quick trip in and out of Guitar Center, but it was faster than I expected. I decided to kill too birds with one stone today at Winter Park Village – lunch at Cheesecake Factory and then walk around the corner to Guitar Center to pick up some home recording gear. I’ve been getting back into playing guitar lately, and even pulled out my old keyboard to start playing a little bit at home. Apple’s GarageBand is the culprit. After downloading the new version on my iPad, it made me want to get back to recording some music in GarageBand on my Mac.

However, some of my old gear doesn’t work with current version of OS X, Snow Leopard. The Presonus Firebox works, but you can barely hear anything. The M-Audio Duo is now considered “legacy”, which means the company won’t provide a driver to work with the current version of OS X. In order to hook up my guitar, Shure SM-58 microphone and get output to my powered speakers, I needed a new box to translate the Audio/Digital waves. These things are small, but they go for about $500 and up.

Why I Have a Messenger Bag

Messenger Bag - © Copyright 2011 by Orlando Local

I’d like to say that it’s not a “man purse”, but I don’t care if people call it that. Basically, it’s a place for my stuff. I carry an iPad, a bluetooth keyboard and a small digital camera with me anywhere I go. Part of it is so I can blog on the go, but there’s more to it. I’ve really gotten to the point where I like having my books on the iPad to read during a meal in a restaurant. Since one of my hobbies is photography, I’m trying to keep a camera with me at all times because….well, because you never know. I don’t want to carry my big Nikon camera and lenses because that stuff is pretty heavy and bulky.

None of these items are terribly big on their own, but combined, they’re more than a handful. I ordered a custom messenger bag from Timbuk2 and I’m pretty happy with it. I can load my stuff and it’s not too obtrusive. Given the expense of the items inside, I keep it with me. A friend recently had her car window smashed and the thief ran off with her gym bag, so I don’t want to leave it in the car. Besides, what’s the point of keeping a camera with you if it’s not actually with you.

It’s Guitar Center Policy

After lunch, I stop inside the store as I have many times before and say “hi” to the guy behind the counter. He immediately calls after me and I turn around. The dude wants me to leave my bag. I told him “the bag stays with me, I’ve got expensive stuff inside.” He’s adamant; it’s store policy. Once again, I decline. I told him if I can’t carry my bag, I’ll be happy to leave. He reaches to call for his manager, but that’s just going to waste more of my time in a meaningless discussion of “store policy.”

Here’s the thing – they think anyone with a bag is going to steal things and put them in the bag. Except, of course, if you’re a woman with a purse. They would never tell a woman that she couldn’t carry her purse. Why? Because it’s got her valuable stuff inside. Well, actually it’s mostly useless shit, but chances are she also has a wallet with cash and/or credit cards with a value less than the contents of my bag. Still, she’s a woman and they won’t bother her.

I’m a guy, though, so clearly, the expectation is that I’m a thief because I have a place to put things. Never mind the security camera, the guy at the door who could easily ask to look (as they do at Disney World or Kennedy Space Center) and then let me go about my business. Never mind that I’ve been a paying customer who bought two of my guitars, a nice amp, keyboard and lots of other silly shit there. Never mind that I planned to drop half a grand on something new today. I’m a thief in their eyes.

Why didn’t I leave my bag with them? For the same reason I carry it with me; I don’t trust thieves! That’s not to say that I expect the poorly paid Guitar Center doorman is a thief, but I also don’t expect him to really provide decent security for my property. To him, it’s just a bag. His job isn’t to watch out for my stuff. He’s watching out for Guitar Center’s stuff. With that in mind, it’s not that hard for someone else to steal my stuff from him.

It’s Not Worth It

In the end, I didn’t argue with the guy. The store is private property and they have a right to refuse service. When you tell me that I can’t hold onto my own property, I can either submit and turn it over or I can leave. I chose to leave. Of course, I left without buying the doodad that I wanted. By viewing me as a potential thief, instead of a potential customer, Guitar Center lost my business that day. Since I pretty much carry this bag all the time when I’m out these days, it looks like they’ve lost my business for good. That’s what happens when you treat customers as threats instead of the lifeblood of your business.

On the bright side, I found what I wanted on Amazon for less money. It’s not in my hands today, but that’s Guitar Center’s fault. I walked in their door ready to buy, but all they saw was a potential thief. Idiots. I don’t give my business to people who think I’m there to steal.

UPDATE!

Hey, I just got a comment on this post and thought I’d share it with you. The reason it interests me is because it comes from an IP address that’s associated with Guitar Center. Here’s what they have to say.

There was a TV show in the 70′s called In Search Of… It was a documentary show that ran from 1976 to 1982, delving into mysteries ranging from UFO’s to NAZI rumors from WWII. Recently, I came across a mystery of my own and decided it was time to conduct a search. The mystery was simple. Where the hell can I buy some decent asparagus around here?

The Problem

I’m eating a lot of asparagus these days. It’s basically because I’ve drastically improved my diet six days a week and I needed to add some vegetables to the mix. Unfortunately, I hate most vegetables. Sure, I can eat some carrots if they’re cooked in a nice soup, but I’m not a fan of them otherwise. I’ve tried broccoli and found it edible, but not enjoyable. I’m not a fan of the squash family. Green beans are fine if you slow cook ‘em, but I also need something that’s relatively quick & easy to prepare, yet fresh. I tried a bag of green beans from Publix that you steam in the microwave. Damn, that was horrible and tasteless.

I found that asparagus fit the bill perfectly. Drizzle a little olive oil on it, sprinkle a small amount of sea salt and cracked pepper, and then put them on the George Foreman grill for five minutes. It’s perfect every time.

Publix was doing a decent job of providing my fix, but something changed recently. Instead of finding some nice, plump asparagus, they switched entirely to this skinny pencil asparagus. You need twenty of those things to equal a good spear, so I passed. Now I had a real dilemma, though. My diet still needs vegetables and I’ve lost my source. Clearly, I needed to find another dealer supplier.

Sanford Farmer’s Market

I decided to skip the middle-man and go right to the source. Checking around, I discovered that Sanford had a Farmer’s Market every Saturday, and Orlando has one every Sunday. Starting on Saturday in Sanford, I found more disappointment than vegetables.

Sanford Farmer's Market Vendors - © Copyright 2011 by Orlando Local

Downtown Sanford is really a nice place to visit on a Saturday afternoon. Parking is a bit of a challenge, but that just means you may have to walk a block or so – it’s not a big deal. I made my way to the market and immediately saw the first vendor selling produce. Nice folks, but they didn’t have any asparagus. In fact, most of their stuff was gone because I didn’t get there until after lunch. If you want to get the good stuff from a farmer at one of these markets, be early and get the first pick.

Undaunted, I went to the next vendor. The thing that surprised me was that the next vendor wasn’t a farmer, but a baker. Another nice couple of folks were selling cupcakes, complete with free samples.

Darling Cupcakes - © Copyright 2011 by Orlando Local

Looking around, I found another vendor selling Kettle Korn (I’m not sure why corn was spelled with a “K”, but I’m not an expert on marketing). They also had free samples, which was really very good. The stuff was being cooked up right there on the sidewalk. If my father were still around, he would’ve brought home a couple of bags.

Custom Kettle Korn - © Copyright 2011 by Orlando Local

Once again, I kept moving. As I worked my way back through the vendors, I only found two other booths selling actual produce. One had a selection of lettuce and another had some potatoes, tomatoes, etc. Not much, though. Everyone else was selling t-shirts, jewelry, or some stuff that never saw a farm at all. I don’t get it. It’s a nice market and full of friendly folks, but it was not at all what I expected from a Farmer’s market.

Silly me, I expected farmers with a lot of produce to share. After all, why call it a Farmer’s Market when most of the vendors aren’t farmers? I have all the cheap jewelry I need (which is to say, none). Other folks were selling plants and there was a guy performing music for the crowd. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice gathering and market. It’s just not a Farmer’s market. At the very least, there’s no asparagus to be found in Sanford.

Plan B

Perhaps my expectations are too high. Perhaps Orlando’s Farmer’s Market would be just as disappointing. I’m not going there to shop for crap I don’t need or be entertained. I just want to buy some vegetables. If you can’t depend upon a farmer to provide your produce needs, there’s only one place to turn.

Clemons Produce - © Copyright 2011 by Orlando Local

Clemons Produce has been around since about 1970, I think. It’s in the south end of town on Curry Ford road in a little strip mall. The place is old school, just rows of produce and some folks working there in aprons. Cash or check; no credit or debit cards. They have things in there that I can’t even identify, so chances are pretty good that you can find the produce you want in this place.

That said, I had a hard time finding any asparagus there. I was about to walk out in disappointment when I came across the manager. He pointed me to the end row, three feet down. I got there, looked, and still couldn’t see it. Well, that’s because there wasn’t much asparagus there. Only three bundles left, but at least it looked better than what I saw at Publix. Still not as plump as I would prefer, but it’s not really asparagus season. It was very fresh, though. After cooking some up, I knew it was worth the trip instead of getting that stuff at the grocery store.

I never did make it to the Orlando Farmer’s Market, but that’s OK. Instead of worrying about avoiding the middle-man, I learned the lesson is to go to the right middle-man.
